Miranda do Douro Castle

Of Miranda do Douro Castle there remain today stretches of wall and traces of the fortress that guarded this border. The ruin has a date: in May 1762, while the stronghold was resisting Spanish troops, the powder magazine exploded. The blast took with it sections that were never rebuilt and marked the episode known as the Guerra do Mirandum. Recent archaeological excavations have uncovered burials associated with the victims of the explosion.
