Sobre

Quinta do Salgueiro - Turismo Rural is a 19th-century country house turned guest house, standing inside the Douro Internacional Natural Park on the EN 221 road, about 1.6 km from the centre of Freixo de Espada à Cinta — the easternmost municipality of the Portuguese Douro, right against the Spanish border. Booking.com files it as a Bed and Breakfast (its own breadcrumb reads «B&Bs in Freixo de Espada à Cinta»), while the official accommodation directory of the Freixo de Espada à Cinta town council describes it as a rustic house dating from the 19th century with «seven elegant rooms and one luxurious suite, spread over two houses», set in ten acres of grounds and with a small shop selling regional products. Guests rate it 9.2/10 from 115 verified reviews, with 9.7 for staff, 9.4 for cleanliness, 9.4 for comfort, 9.3 for location, 9.2 for facilities, 9.0 for value and a perfect 10.0 for free Wi-Fi.

Exactly where it is

The address is Estrada Nacional 221, 5180-104 Freixo de Espada à Cinta, and the coordinates published on the property's own listing are 41.095095, -6.827322. OpenStreetMap places that point on a node called «Quinta do Salgueiro», on Avenida Guerra Junqueiro, in the parish of Freixo de Espada à Cinta e Mazouco. Measured in a straight line from those coordinates, the distances are short and checkable: the town centre is 1.2-1.7 km away (Booking.com says «1 mile from the centre»), the pillory 1.7 km, the parish church and the castle 1.9 km, the Douro river, along its international stretch, 4.9 km, the Penedo Durão viewpoint 5.4 km, the Saucelle dam 5.7 km, the village of Mazouco 7.0 km and Barca d'Alva 12.2 km. Torre de Moncorvo is 20.8 km away and Vila Nova de Foz Côa 26.5 km. Booking.com adds that the Douro Internacional Natural Park starts at the door (0 ft) and that Bragança airport is 78 miles, roughly 125 km, away.

The rooms and what they cost

According to the town council the house has seven rooms and one suite across two buildings, but Booking.com sells three unit types. For 21-23 September 2026, two adults, in euros and with 6% VAT excluded, the verified rates were: Double Room, 20 m², €85 per night, with a queen bed, patio, terrace, garden, mountain and landmark views, a sofa and a desk, entirely on the ground floor; Twin Room, 20 m², €85 per night, with two single beds, a balcony and a pool view; and the Suite - Amendoeira, 30 m², €108 per night, the only private suite, with a queen bed plus a sofa bed, balcony, terrace, private bathroom and a mosquito net. The dated rate table states «Max. people: 2» for all three types, so each unit sleeps two. Every unit has its own air conditioning, heating, soundproofing, a private entrance, linen and towels, free toiletries and cable channels.

Breakfast, dinner and the way the house is run

Rates with breakfast included are scored 9.2 by the guests who took them, and for the same dates there was an alternative rate without breakfast at the same price. The property serves dinner at €25 per person per night and offers half board at €25 per person per night. There is a bar and an on-site coffee house. This is a small, owner-run place: verified Booking.com guests write that «the couple who run this B&B» welcomed them «with open arms» and cooked them dinner, that the rooms came with «a small decanter of very welcome Port» on arrival, and that the hostess even sang fado in the evening. Several mention Thor, the family labrador, who walks the grounds with guests.

Pool, garden and facilities

The outdoor pool is free to use, open all year and open to all ages, with a view, a shallow end, pool towels, loungers and parasols. The grounds include a garden, picnic area, sun deck, patio and terrace with outdoor furniture, and the town council stresses that every room opens directly onto the pool and the garden. Families get family rooms, a children's high chair, an indoor play area and board games. Parking is free on site, no booking needed, with an accessible bay, and the free Wi-Fi in the public areas scores a perfect 10.0. The house also offers daily housekeeping, a shared TV lounge, laundry at an extra charge and invoicing on request.

What to do around it

Sitting inside the Douro Internacional Natural Park is the whole point of this house: Booking.com lists hiking, walking tours and cycling among the property's activities. The Penedo Durão viewpoint, 5.4 km away, is the classic balcony over the Douro canyon and the Spanish Arribes del Duero, which the listing puts at 3.8 miles. Seven kilometres away lies Mazouco, where in 1981 archaeologists identified the first open-air Palaeolithic rock-art site ever found in Portugal — the celebrated horse engraved into schist, less than two kilometres from the Douro. In Freixo de Espada à Cinta itself, 1.7-1.9 km away, stand the pillory, the castle with its Torre do Galo keep and the Manueline parish church. The town is also the birthplace of the poet Guerra Junqueiro — the avenue the estate sits on carries his name — and is known for its almond blossom in late winter, a recurring subject in the property's own photographs and the origin of its suite's name, Amendoeira (almond tree). For eating out, Booking.com points to the Latas, Bom Retiro and Cinta d'Ouro restaurants, about 2.1-2.3 km away.

House rules worth knowing

Check-in runs from 16:00 to 22:00 and check-out from 08:30 to 12:00. The property only accepts cash payments and does not allow pets; smoking is not permitted, although there is a designated smoking area outdoors. Children of all ages are welcome, but from age 4 they are charged as adults; a free crib is available on request for ages 0-3 and there are no extra beds. None of the rates seen required a credit card. The licence number printed in Booking.com's fine print is 1255. Book ahead: the house is small and, on the dates tested, it was sold out on 15-17 September and 10-12 November 2026. Its official website (quintadosalgueiro.com) was still showing an under-construction page in August 2026; direct contact is +351 279 652 007 or info@quintadosalgueiro.com.
