That is what lies behind the «Beachfront» tag on its Booking.com page — the Praia Fluvial do Castelo river beach, also known as Ilha dos Amores, and the old Castelo quay are less than 500 metres away, and a British guest writes on Booking.com that «there is a great riverside beach you can walk to».

Booking.com puts the property 2.3 km from the centre of Castelo de Paiva. The nearest listed restaurants are O Geraldo, 3.2 km away, and Pizzaria Líder and Adega Sporting, both 3.4 km. The closest railway station is Cête, 19 km; the airports are Francisco Sá Carneiro (Porto), 53 km, Vila Real, 79 km, and Viseu, 80 km. Porto's Estádio do Dragão is 47 km away. The continental buffet breakfast was included in every rate sampled and is the single best-rated thing about the house: 10 out of 10. Guests describe home-made cakes and jams, fruit and fresh bread. Staff score a perfect 10.0 — several Booking.com reviews name the owner, Manuel, and the hostess, and a South African guest writes that «Manuel the owner was friendly, super helpful and went beyond expectations». This is a family-run house and it shows in the welcome.

Accessibility

The property advertises facilities for guests with reduced mobility: a bathroom with grab rails by the toilet, a raised toilet, a lowered sink, an emergency cord and wheelchair access, plus hearing-accessible equipment. What is around

The hamlet of Castelo, where the house stands, was an old Douro river port already recorded in a document of 1423, serving the whole Paiva valley and the lands of Arouca and Cinfães. Facing the beach lies the Ilha do Castelo — according to the Fornos parish council, the only island along the entire Portuguese course of the Douro — where archaeological work uncovered the remains of a 15th-century hermitage and of a medieval tower; a legend about a farmer and a noblewoman gave it its popular name, Ilha dos Amores. The municipal swimming pool stands right beside the beach, and the Miradouro de Catapeixe viewpoint over the valley is about 800 metres from the house.

From here it is an easy trip to the Paiva Walkways and the 516 Arouca suspension bridge, up the Douro valley to Régua and Pinhão, or along the Route of the Romanesque, on which Crasto Payva Douro Nature itself is listed as accommodation.
